En este sitio se interpreta la historia de la ocupación española de la Florida y el esfuerzo de los ingleses para dominar y controlarla.

Este Monumento Nacional administrado por el Servicio Nacional de Parques es un fuerte Español construido en 1740 de aproximadamente 200 acres (0.4 km²) en las riveras del Rio Matanzas en la costa Atlantica del Norte del estado de Florida.

El monumento original era solo el fuerte en la Isla Rattlesnake. A través de los años el Servicio Nacional de Parques ha adquirido tierras aledañas tanto en la isla Rattlesnake como en la isla Anastasia con el fin de preservar un segmento del ecosistema prístino de la barrera de la isla.
