World Water Day 2006: Water and Culture

In 1992, the UN General Assembly designated March 22 as World Water Day to draw international attention to the critical lack of clean, safe drinking water worldwide. It is a time when we are encouraged to pause and consider the largest public health issue of our time – the global scarcity of clean water. wwd2006_150x20002

The theme 'Water and Culture' of WWD 2006 draws attention to the fact that there are as many ways of viewing, using, and celebrating water as there are cultural traditions across the world. Sacred, water is at the heart of many religions and is used in different rites and ceremonies. Fascinating and ephemeral, water has been represented in art for centuries - in music, painting, writing, cinema - and it is an essential factor in many scientific endeavors as well. Each region of the world has a different way of holding water sacred, but each recognizes its value, and its central place in human lives. Cultural traditions, indigenous practices, and societal values determine how people perceive and manage water in the world's different regions.

    CGC runs the
Virtual Walk For Water as a symbolic act of solidarity for the many women and children in "water stressed" countries who often have to walk six miles per day to get water for their families. This was another meaningful way to get involved and demonstrate our commitment to this important humanitarian cause.

The volunteers learned how to sample for dissolved oxygen (DO), acidity (pH), temperature and turbidity and also learned what each of these mean to the water’s quality!

“Business as an Agent of World Benefit – Management Knowledge Leading Positive Change” October 22-25, 2006

We were invited to this event organized by the Academy of Management, Case Western Reserve University, and the UN Global Compact.

In addition to attendees in Cleveland, several thousand participants from 37 countries joined the BAWB Virtual Forum, an online platform providing live coverage from the event.

More than 400 business leaders and educators from around the world met in Cleveland/Ohio.

A key outcome of the forum was the agreement among representatives from major academic institutions and initiatives, including the Academy of Management, the British Academy of Management, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the European Foundation for Management Development, the European Academy of Business in Society, and the Global Responsible Leadership Initiative, to begin the process of drafting Principles for Responsible Business Education (PRBE). America Recycle Day- It All Comes Back To you! Nov 15, 2006

Everyone knows recycling means less trash going to our landfills. But the greatest environmental benefits of recycling are related not to landfills, but to the conservation of energy and natural resources and the prevention of pollution when a recycled material, rather than a raw material, is used to make a new product.
Common Ground for Conservation endorses the recycling and the purchase of products made with recycled content and encourages the community to get involved in the contest, "Florida (K-12) Schools Recycling Pledge Card" promoting, distributing and collecting Postcards at the Miami-Dade schools.
