COMMUNITY OF COMMUNITIES PROGRAM: CLEAN WATER ~ WWMD

Volunteers Needed for World Water Monitoring Day!

Miami, Florida, US (Monday, August 27, 2008)

Do you want to have some fun in the water while doing something really important? Then contact the
Common Ground for Conservation Clean Water Team and see how you can be part of World Water Monitoring Day this year. We are looking for people interested in helping to monitor the quality of local streams, rivers, lakes, ponds and other water resources in our community anytime between September 18 and October 18.

You don’t have to be an experienced water monitor to participate. This is a great way to learn how monitoring helps to protect our waters. Four simple tests are basic indicators of the water’s health. You can learn how to sample for dissolved oxygen (DO), acidity (pH), temperature and turbidity…and learn what each of these mean to the water’s quality! Then results are entered into the international World Water Monitoring Day database so everyone can access them.

America’s Clean Water Foundation (ACWF) and the International Water Association (IWA), together with the Association of State and Interstate Water Administrators and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency coordinate efforts leading up to World Water Monitoring Day each year on October 18. Principal sponsors include Southern Company, Smithfield Foods, Weyerhaeuser Foundation and C & M Capitolink and CDM. Common Ground for Conservation is helping with this event in our community.

The goal of this annual worldwide educational event is to create a network of individuals from around the world; people from all ages, backgrounds, faiths, creeds and ethnicities that are willing to invest in the protection of their community’s waterways.

Volunteers are invited to perform simple and fun tests in safe, accessible areas. If you are interested in participating in World Water Monitoring Day, please contact
