The Arbor Day Campaign was a successful project that demonstrates our commitment to environmental education. The objective of this project was to raise public awareness about the importance of urban reforestation.
The campaign's goal was to plant native trees in schools around the districts of Miami-Dade County, in order to raise awareness and to help restore urban canopy tree and native habitat for wildlife. The campaign began on the State Arbor Day, January 18, 2008, and ran until the National Arbor Day, April 25, 2008.
During this time we scheduled a time, date, and place for each district office and schools interested to participate planting a native tree and placing alongside Xavier Cortada’s “Native Flag” stating "I hereby reclaim this land for nature".
The first tree was planted with the City of Hialeah where Hialeah Mayor, Julio Robaina presented Mildred Real, CEO/Common Ground for Conservation a proclamation naming March 20, 2008, Tree Day in Hialeah. Folowed by a tree planted by Manuel Orbis/Commissioner Joe Martinez Office at Varela High school. AThe last tree was planted in District 1, with Commissioner Barbara Jordan at Hibiscus Elementary.
